AI to Reduce Food Waste

 AI to Reduce Food Waste

  • 200 crore people suffer from hunger or undernourishment.
  • One-third of the food produced is wasted every year around the world.
  • On average, each of us wastes 74 kg of food every year.
  •  Reducing food waste by 50% by 2030 is one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Perishable The Oxford Dictionary defines this word as (especially of food) likely to decay or go bad quickly
  •  Why learn this word?
  •  The majority of food waste happens because it perishes.
  • It gets spoiled before consumption.
  • Fruits, vegetables, meat, etc. may rot right on the farm or transportation or in the grocery stores.
  • Suppose you went to a supermarket to buy paneer and found that it expires in 3 days.
  • Most of us would choose to buy an alternative. This leads to wastage.
  •  To encourage sales in such cases, discounted pricing is a good option.
  • Because paying the same price for food that expires soon doesn’t make sense.
                                                                 AI reduces food waste
  • A startup called Wasteless is using AI to help supermarkets to create dynamic pricing and reduce food waste.
  • The startup says it is on track to hit an 80% reduction in food waste.
  • This also means higher revenues for food sellers.
