Public Wi-Fi
Who doesn't like free stuff?
- Imagine you just came out of a movie theatre and wanted to book a table at the restaurant.
- You open your phone and see that the theatre has free Wi-Fi.
- Would you rather use your mobile data or switch to the free Wi-Fi network?
- The answer is quite clear. Many would choose the latter.
Is the free Wi-Fi as safe as you think it is?
- If you are connected to any open Wi-Fi network, you should know that you're not the only one who is connected to that network.
- If the Wi-Fi network is not configured safely, anyone who has experience with networks can read the data going across the network and modify it.
- Simply put, you might end up on a page that looks trustworthy but might have been designed by an attacker.
Using these, attackers might try to invade your privacy or steal your valuable information like your banking data, usernames, passwords, PIN, and so on.
- It's hard to say if a network
is completely secure, since it depends on various factors such
as network & security settings, firewalls, etc.
- However, it's always best to
ensure the proper security measures when using or connecting to an open
or a public network.
You
can prevent this by:
- Using a VPN (Virtual
Private Network)
- Keeping your device software
up to date.
- Not downloading anything
over public WiFi
- Using mobile network connection
for banking transactions
- Avoiding logging into your
accounts while using public WiFi
